Both organizations and political leaders are lagging in addressing the broader societal impacts that AI brings with it. It’s essential to recognize that AI is no longer just an engineering or data challenge—it’s a societal force requiring careful, ethical consideration at all levels. And crucially, these decisions should not be left in the hands of big tech companies, nor should they be addressed solely by regulatory frameworks, which often fail to capture the depth and breadth of AI’s societal implications.

AI’s Far-Reaching Influence Beyond Technology

AI today does much more than improve productivity or optimize processes. Its applications—spanning from workplace monitoring and recruitment tools to personalized learning and customer service—directly influence people’s lives, redefining how we interact, work, and even think. For instance, AI-powered hiring systems are shaping employment opportunities, while productivity-tracking tools are changing employee management dynamics and eroding privacy in ways we are still grappling with.

These applications don’t just improve efficiency; they alter social structures, influence job security, and shift the balance of power in workplaces and society at large. Despite this, AI is largely discussed as a technical problem within organizations, missing the much-needed ethical, social, and human-centered approach. The reality is that AI is far more than a set of algorithms—it’s a system that, when deployed, inherently affects trust, autonomy, and well-being. And if we continue to focus on AI as a technical challenge alone, we risk overlooking these critical issues, allowing technology to transform our lives with little accountability to its human impact.

Why Big Tech Can’t Be the Sole Decision-Makers

Currently, decisions about AI’s deployment are predominantly shaped by large tech corporations, many of which have significant financial incentives tied to its success. These companies often hold a monopoly on AI research and development, giving them disproportionate influence over how AI is introduced and integrated across society. While big tech companies are undoubtedly experts in the technical side of AI, they are not neutral parties when it comes to considering its societal and ethical implications. Their incentives often prioritize innovation, speed, and profitability over the ethical nuances that come with AI’s widespread use.

Relying on big tech to set ethical standards for AI is problematic. These companies, while instrumental in advancing technology, often lack the checks and balances needed to ensure their decisions are made in the public interest. History has shown that when the development and deployment of technology are left to profit-driven entities alone, ethical concerns often fall by the wayside. Take, for example, the social media industry’s struggle with privacy and misinformation; in many cases, ethical considerations came too late, after considerable damage was already done. AI should not be governed by similar dynamics. Decisions about its deployment should be made with input from diverse stakeholders—workers, ethicists, academics, and communities affected by the technology—not solely by those who stand to profit.

Why Regulation Alone Won’t Solve the Problem

Some argue that government regulation is the answer to ensuring responsible AI use. However, regulation alone is not sufficient, nor can it fully address the depth and complexity of AI’s impact on society. Regulations, while essential, tend to lag behind technological advancement, often reacting to issues after they have already surfaced. To responsibly integrate AI into society, organizations and governments need to adopt a holistic approach, one that goes beyond technical proficiency or regulatory compliance. This means creating frameworks that prioritize human-centered design, transparency, and ethical accountability at every level of AI deployment. The societal and ethical implications of AI require diverse perspectives, ongoing dialogue, and a commitment to continuous assessment. Cross-functional teams—consisting of technologists, ethicists, sociologists, legal experts, and, importantly, representatives of the communities most impacted by AI—should be involved in shaping how AI is designed, deployed, and managed.

For organizations, this shift means recognizing that AI is not simply a tool for productivity but a force that reshapes human interactions, workplace dynamics, and societal structures. Leaders need to think beyond immediate business objectives and consider the long-term consequences of AI on employee well-being, privacy, and trust. This involves establishing ethical principles that guide AI use, investing in training that fosters an understanding of AI’s societal impact, and fostering open communication with employees and stakeholders about how AI will be used.

For policymakers, this means rethinking regulation not as a one-size-fits-all solution but as part of a larger, multi-faceted approach. Governments should create avenues for public engagement, allowing citizens to voice their concerns and opinions about AI in their communities. Rather than prescribing rigid rules, policymakers could promote guidelines that encourage transparency, fairness, and inclusivity in AI deployment. Additionally, governments could incentivize companies to develop responsible AI practices through grants or tax benefits, supporting organizations that actively work to align technology with public interest.

The Future of AI and Human Agency

The choices we make today regarding AI integration will have far-reaching consequences for human agency, autonomy, and the fabric of society itself. If we continue to view AI deployment as merely a technical endeavor, we risk allowing technology to shape our world without adequate oversight or ethical consideration.
